It's estimated that 43% of customers who take out a landline only package are elderly and the landline is a vital lifeline. In the last decade BT has increased it's line rental price by over 80% and those customers who are on a voice only package have seen very little improvement in service despite the soaring costs. Customers who bundle phone and broadband or TV packages with their landline have gained significant improvements in service over the last 10 years.
BT say that the £7 per month reduction will automatically be applied to the bills of new and existing customers from April 2018. BT have also pledged to protect their landline only customers from future price increases by capping line rental and call costs at the rate of inflation. Ofcom expect that when BT reduce their tariff, other providers will follow suit.
Did you know that BT offer line rental from £5.10 per month, including a small call allowance. If you are on low income Government benefits you may be eligible for a line rental package called 'BT Basic'.
