Broadband Guide - What you need to know
BT Broadband speed test error

We're a big fan of BT Broadband, but BT are deceiving their customers by providing an extremely inaccurate speedtest facility. When we tried the broadband performance test provided by BT wholesale - the results were outstanding! Our 30Mbps broadband connection managed to achieve speeds as low as 0 and as high as 119Mbps (at least, according to the BT speed checker). An increase of over 296% on the maximum that we can achieve.

These extraordinary leaps in speed could be achieved by simply switching to a different website browser. We reported this problem back in May 2020 but received no response and there has clearly been no resolution. Perhaps misleading consumers is not a concern? Whilst we used to rate the BT Wholesale broadband tester, we now don't believe it's fit for purpose. Our test was carried out using macOS Monterey on a fixed wired connection using three of the most popular web browsers on macOS: Safari, Google Chrome & Firefox.

In our opinion the BT broadband performance test provided by BT wholesale is not fit for purpose

1st test results - Using a 30Mbps fixed wired connection

  • Firefox on MacOS - 30.45Mbps download
  • Safari on MacOS - 43.35Mbps download
  • Google Chrome on MacOS - 0.00Mbps download

2nd test results - Using a 30Mbps fixed wired connection

  • Firefox on MacOS - Failed no response
  • Safari on MacOS - 119.81Mbps download
  • Google Chrome on MacOS - 30.88Mbps download
