What is Mac OS Extended Journaled?

Mac OS Extended Journaled is a disk format used on Apple computers operating macOS 10.12 or earlier. It uses the Mac format Journaled HFS Plus to protect the integrity of the hierarchical file system. Choose OS Extended Journaled if you don’t need an encrypted or case-sensitive format. The APFS file format is used on macOS 10.13 onwards
